NPR Utah
At NPR, I developed my audio skillset, as well as refined my newsletter writing and video storytelling.
I ended my time at NPR Utah as the Audience Development + Communications Manager, a promotion that taught me how to creatively and strategically create content for varied audiences. I was responsible for the development of new and underrepresented audiences; both as listeners and donors. I managed the community calendar and outreach, and helped plan events and think through ways to connect digitally and in-person. I also oversaw direct reports, providing training and career advancement opportunities to new team members.
Finally, I was the Co-chair of KUER and PBS Utah's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and sought to help keep KUER accountable for representation both on staff, and in our storytelling.
Special Projects
RadioWest Care Package
In an effort to create a sense of camaraderie early on in the pandemic, I helped launch and manage a limited email series called “Care Package” from RadioWest. As another weekly touch-point for listeners, it reminded subscribers about the previous week’s episode and other related shows from RadioWest’s vast archive.
It included recommendations for books, films, TV shows, food and virtually anything the KUER staff wanted to share with our listeners. We also invited listeners to share what was getting them through this strange time and received some lovely responses.
Here are a few of my favorites:
KUER’s 60th Anniversary
June 5, 2020, marked 60 years since KUER first took to the airwaves. Though we were planning a huge community celebration, COVID-19 had other ideas.
Instead, throughout the month of June, we continued to honor the station’s history — and I created this video from archived photos and clips that was shared on social. I also helped create this anniversary website which allows listeners to share their memories, check out the timeline of KUER and view old photos.
I started at KUER as the station’s Communications Specialist, where I sat between the marketing and development teams, and was responsible for all of KUER’s external communications.
Whether I was sending out a press release or one of our three weekly newsletters, I worked from high-level concepts to the last fine print, leveraging themes, seasonal events, relevant news or pop culture to speak directly to our desired audience.
Most of my time was spent copy writing and editing, as well as rethinking email fundraising. I drafted scripts for on-air promotions, helped produce live pitch breaks during our annual fund drives and even lent my voice to on-air promos.
I was also the staff-elected representative on the KUER Advisory Board.
