I've made it a point in my career to talk about things that matter most to me. One of my passions is the discussion of race and inclusion in both the hiring process and accurate representation in media. Moving the dial on diversity in different industries is something I've had the pleasure of writing, training others and learning about.

Plenary session at Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS)

Presented keynote session “Repairing the Neglect: How journalists can begin to cover marginalized communities” at the Journalism and Women’s Symposium annual conference, held in Mt. Hood, Oregon.

In this session, attendees examine their own identities to rethink their approach to sourcing, reporting on underrepresented communities and interacting with the public. We discuss empathy and how it can help journalists engage more deeply with diverse communities, and how to repair relationships with those they have ignored or marginalized in the past.

Led workshop on checking your bias in hiring practices

Partnering with the Emma Bowen Foundation, known for its approach to building the pipeline for diverse talent, and the Institute for Nonprofit News, my colleague Amy Kovac-Ashley and I developed a training for managers.

It was designed to help managers and newsroom leadership build their own plans for becoming inclusive organizations and welcoming new hires, fellows or interns who may not see themselves reflected in the current staffs.
